| Female COs growing in numbers |

SOUTH CAROLINA - According to the Associated Press, South Carolina’s prisons are hiring more women every year and now women account for more than 42% of the state's prison security force. State Corrections Department officials say they can only take so many women because prison rules require officers of the same gender as inmates to conduct cell searches or strip searches of prisoners. Captain Susan Safford, a detention officer at Horry County’s J. Reuben Long Detention Center said there were not as many women working as correctional officers when she started almost twenty years ago, but now, the number of female corrections officers does not surprise her.
