| Report: TYC hiring money misspent |

TEXAS - Officials at the troubled Texas Youth Commission have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for hiring new corrections officers on renovating and relocating offices, a newspaper reported. They spent $550,000 on furniture, renovations and other equipment even though lawmakers rejected a request for such spending, according to a report Sunday in The Dallas Morning News. The TYC's acting executive director, Dimitria Pope, told the newspaper that the spending was necessary to restructure the office, accommodate new employees and improve operations following last year's prison abuse scandal. Agency officials said the money was left over because they couldn't find enough applicants to hire as many new [officers] as the budget allowed. They're still more than 500 [officers] short.
