WASHINGTON, D.C. – The District of Columbia Department of Corrections’ automatic HIV/AIDS testing program reached a milestone this month by successfully screening more than 19,000 inmates since June of 2006. Testing occurs at intake and upon release at the D.C. Jail. The DOC partners with the D.C. Department of Health’s HIV and AIDS Administration to increase District-wide HIV testing and treatment for adults. “The department’s measures to specifically address the HIV pandemic are reflective of our overall efforts to improve the health of those entering and leaving our gates,” says DCDOC Director Devon Brown. “Our automatic HIV/AIDS initiative has received widespread acclaim and has served as a catalyst for the introduction of legislation to create similar programs by state and local governments across the country, as well as the federal penal system.” The American Correctional Association has invited the department to present the testing program at its summer conference in New Orleans. |
