Ex-county inmate settles jail sex lawsuit

A former Suffolk County (Mass.) inmate, who said she was raped by three officers and gave birth to a daughter, accepted a settlement from the Sheriff's Department last Monday just as the case was set for trial.
Now 29, the single mother known in court documents as Jane Doe was ready to testify that officers forced her to have sex while she was behind bars on drug charges in 1999.
"It's resolved," said her attorney, John Donovan. "They've asked as part of the settlement that we not discuss it."
Steve Tompkins, a spokesman for Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral, said no settlement figure was available. "We're still negotiating what the settlement is going to be," he said.
The inmate's lawsuit claimed former Sheriff Richard J. Rouse's office knew officers were using her for sex, but took no action when the men denied it.
The officer who fathered her child was fired.
He has no role in the 4-year-old's life and has failed to pay $10-per-month in court-ordered support, according to a source.
Tompkins said tougher internal investigations and new policies have "clamped down" on abuses of inmates.
