MASSACHUSETTS – The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department will add a civics component to its Choice Officer program, where officers speak with schoolchildren about the dangers of drug use and gang involvement. The Department’s 23 Choice Officers will add topics such as the branches of government, voting, and elections to their presentations.“It’s important for kids to understand they have a stake in our government,” Department Director of Legislative Affairs Matt O’Malley says. “By teaching civics our officers are relaying information about how these kids can fit into the larger picture of good government and good citizenship." The new component will supplement the curriculum throughout classrooms in the Boston Public Schools. The Choice Officers have been training in the civics component since the summer of 2007. |
