| Alternative to state jail takeover praised |

MAINE - An alternative to Gov. John Baldacci's plan for county jail takeover jointly sponsored by the Maine Sheriff's Association and Maine County Commissioners' Association offers more statewide benefits, Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said Tuesday in an interview. Brackett said the three main objectives of the alternative are to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the county jail system, to better utilize bed space for not only the counties but state corrections as well, and to continue to provide appropriate services for special needs, such as mental health, substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders.
