Ala. system asks for $63M

ALABAMA - Alabama prisons are overcrowded, undermanned and need at least $63 million in new money in the next fiscal year, a 16 percent increase over the current appropriation, Department of Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen told legislators Wednesday. Allen made his request to lawmakers who are trying to figure out how to cut about $230 million from the state's budget for non-education agencies like prisons, state troopers and Medicaid.

The request for $63 million more than the current $401 million appropriation came during budget hearings that are leading up to the 2008 regular session which begins Feb. 5. Read more.
