Identity mix-up lets inmate slip out of jail

Authorities were searching last Thursday for a suspected bank robber mistakenly released from the Weber County (Utah) Jail -- the second such mix-up at a Wasatch Front jail in the past two months.
Joseph Manuel Reyes, 26, was released last Wednesday night from the jail because of an administrative error, said Weber County Chief Deputy Gerald Cook.
Reyes "actually claimed to be another inmate" whose identity had not been verified, Cook said. "The inmate that should have been released wasn't, and the inmate that shouldn't have been released, was.
"We're obviously checking into that internally to see if our protocols are appropriate," Cook said. "Our big concern, obviously, is getting him caught. That's the first priority."
Reyes was indicted by a federal grand jury for the Feb. 4 robbery of a Logan Wells Fargo Bank, which netted about $3,000, U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch said in a statement Thursday. A firearm was not used in the robbery. If convicted, Reyes faces a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
He originally is from Salinas, Calif., authorities said, but has ties to northern Utah. Police believe he is in Salt Lake City, however, because he boarded a southbound UTA bus in Ogden after being released last Wednesday night.
