MAINE - While all of the details of the state plan to consolidate jails have not been released, enough is known to concern anyone who cares about taxes, the management of our jails and the administration of criminal justice. Under the state plan (developed in private, by state corrections officials) the Kennebec County jail is slated for closure, along with four smaller jails. Why should anyone care about the closing of our jail? Quite simply because it is the best-run jail in the state. Don't take my word for it. In 2005-06, Maine established the Corrections Alternatives Advisory Commission. A nationally renowned corrections consulting firm, Luminosity, was hired to evaluate our current jail practices and to assist the commission in developing recommendations to improve our jails. Maine spent $300,000 on this commission -- and there never was any serious discussion concerning the state takeover of the county jails. Read more.
