| Bill to create grievance program |

WASHINGTON - For the second year in a row, lawmakers are pushing to create an independent agency to investigate complaints about the Department of Corrections. A corrections ombudsman would be able to identify systemic problems within the agency and recommend solutions, said Sen. Jim Kastama, D-Puyallup. He sponsored a bill to create such an office last year, and reintroduced it last week, noting that the department has been beset with controversies over the release of felons, and sexual abuse over the last year.
