Youth facility will end coeducation

OREGON - Oregon's joint incarceration of male and female juvenile offenders is coming to a quiet end at the 94-year-old Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility. Since the early 1970s, young male and female offenders have shared the 30-acre hillside campus in southeast Salem. Time was when boys and girls -- housed in gender-segregated cottages -- came together for meals, schooling and activities. Such mingling has waned in recent years, losing favor with juvenile corrections officials.

Now, officials plan to extinguish Hillcrest's coeducational era. By the end of February, all 59 female offenders -- ages 12 to 24 -- will move to Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany. Oak Creek was closed in 2002 during a state budget crisis -- less than five years after opening as a mostly male regional correctional facility. With funding restored, Oak Creek will become Oregon's main juvenile facility for female offenders. Read more.
