| Inmate gets life for CO death |

MARYLAND - A judge has sentenced state prison inmate Brandon Morris to life without parole for murdering a correctional officer during an escape from a Hagerstown hospital. Judge Joseph Manck Monday rejected the state's request for the death penalty for Morris, 22. Morris was convicted by a jury this month of first-degree murder in the January 2006 slaying of Officer Jeffery Wroten. The officer from Martinsburg, W.Va., was killed with his own gun as Morris fled from his custody at Washington County Hospital. Morris took a hospital visitor briefly hostage and then carjacked a taxi, forcing the cabbie at gunpoint to drive him into nearby Pennsylvania.
