| OpEd: Don't privatize corrections |

VERMONT - I have read recently of Gov. Douglas' desire to sell our rights to our state. Apparently, our government was approached by a private company that believes that buying the Vermont lottery would be worth an initial up-front payment of $50 million. Apparently, there are many millions made by our state off of our citizens hoping to strike it rich. In opposition, Speaker of the House Gaye Symington has been quoted saying that "our state is not for sale." I thought on this, and I was perturbed because this sort of righteousness is not being expressed in areas where it truly does affect us Vermonters. As someone who volunteers in our local corrections facility, I am bewildered that there is not the same feeling regarding our inmates, that they not be sold to a lowest bidder. Read more.
