| Lawsuit alleges abuse |

MICHIGAN -A group of current and former female prisoners allege they suffered rapes, assaults, extortion and harassment by male corrections officers in state prisons and camps. A trial in the lawsuit filed by the women against the Michigan Department of Corrections is in its third week of testimony in Washtenaw County Circuit Court. The lawsuit, which dates back to the 1990s, is one of several pending cases around the state, officials say. Most of the alleged incidents occurred at the Scott Correctional Facility in Plymouth during the 1990s, but some were reported as recently as 2002. Other facilities involved include the Huron Valley Center in Pittsfield Township, which closed in 2004; the Special Alternative Incarceration boot camp near Chelsea; Camp Brighton; Western Wayne Correctional Facility in Wayne County; Camp Branch and Florence Crane Correctional in Branch County; a technical rules violation center and Camp Gilman in Oakland County; and the Grand Rapids Correctional Center.
