CANADA - The BC Corrections Service is playing down concerns about a recruitment and retention crisis after Union protests at three jails Wednesday. BCGEU official Dean Purdy says 15 percent of correctional officers and sheriffs quit last year because of low wages and the problem isn't getting any better, "The labour pool is shrinking, there's not as much time as they think and I think it could reach a crisis situation in a year or two if they don't address it soon." But Lisa Lapointe with BC Corrections says the agency has recruited dozens of new employees, "We do have people leaving for various reasons, we haven't a strong indication that they're leaving to go to Federal corrections for example because of wages."
