MISSISSIPPI - Some legislators apparently still believe drug courts are soft on crime. That mentality is one of the obstacles supporters of a drug court system for Mississippi must overcome. The other chief obstacle is financing. Drug courts handle only cases involving nonviolent offenders whose crimes are related to their addiction. Currently 14 circuit court districts - including the 12th Circuit Court District that includes Forrest and Perry counties - have adult drug courts. The Forrest County Youth Court also has a drug court. The 15th Circuit Court District, which includes Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Lawrence, Marion and Pearl River counties, received $75,000 from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation in December to help start a program.
