| Youth campus targeted for change |

GEORGIA - The McIntosh Youth Development Campus in Darien, which dodged a plan to close it in 2002, once again is in the crosshairs of changing attitudes and need. In his proposed 2009 budget, Gov. Sonny Perdue is recommending an end to the state's short-term program for juvenile delinquents and that the campus on Ga. 251 be closed. Short-term programs run about 90 days. Perdue is proposing that the Savannah River Challenge Youth Development Center be converted to long-term rehabilitation and approved for an increase in staff. Shutting down the facility would save the state $3.4 million. Built in 1998, the center can house up to 60 male juveniles and falls under the auspices of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
