| Iowa system upgrades to be debated |

IOWA - For a few days in November 2005, Iowa’s prison system found itself in an unflattering spotlight after two inmates serving life prison terms escaped undetected from the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. A little more than two years later, leaders at the Iowa Statehouse are considering an infusion of cash to ease an overburdened system. Gov. Chet Culver has called for a more than $250 million investment in Iowa’s corrections system, including the construction of a new maximum-security prison at Fort Madison. The current prison, established in 1839 while Iowa was still a territory, houses its most serious offenders. Culver argues a new facility will provide more security for staff and inmates and minimize the chance of escapes. Read more.
