| State pulls last inmates from jail |

INDIANA - The state Department of Corrections finished removing the last of its 90 inmates from the Porter County Jail within the past week, affecting one source of revenue for the jail. The state cited potential liability because of jail crowding. The state's pullout means the county will face a loss of close to $1 million. Sheriff David Lain said the jail no longer houses state inmates because the agency's commissioner was compelled to avoid "potential liability for the state to have state inmates in overcrowding (facilities) sleeping on temporary beds when there is a whole pod here." "We had a situation where we had too many inmates for too little space," Lain said. "Our jail has been in a condition that we have never been able, because of the lack of staffing, to fully open."
