Plastic spoons off menu

ILLINOIS - There will be some changes during mealtime at the Peoria County Jail: Inmates will no longer carry around their own personal spoons but will instead receive the cutlery from staff members and return it to them after eating. The change comes on the heels of a complaint by Lorenzo Mitchell, a 28-year-old inmate awaiting a February trial on drug charges. He alleged the flexible, white plastic spoon he was issued after entering the jail became dirty and that he's not given the proper means to wash or replace it.

Inmates will now pick up their trays, cups and spoons in their jail pods and return them after eating to guards or jail trusties - inmates who have earned greater freedom and privileges around the jail because of good behavior. Read more.
