MAINE - The ongoing debate over whether the state of Maine should take over county jails appears to have been resolved by proposed legislation that makes the operation of county jails a partnership between the state and the county. Initially, Gov. John Baldacci had come up with a plan to consolidate all correctional facilities at the state level. The goal was, as always, to save taxpayer money. Read more.
