| All-clear on asbestos premature |

OHIO - A prison official's assertion that dormitories at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution were asbestos-free has turned out to be untrue, records show. Early last year, the official said the last asbestos in the dorms had been removed two years earlier, according to the inspectors with the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee. In fact, the aging prison was packed with asbestos, some of which was highly dangerous. A May 2007 survey of the prison obtained by The Dispatch shows that pipe insulation, caulking and tile floors in inmate living areas contained asbestos, which can cause cancer. Read more.
