| Early release for terminally ill challenges court |

PENNSYLVANIA - In 1974, William Edwards was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for a 1970 robbery and murder involving a man who was tied up and killed. In the last 30 years while at Graterford state prison, Edwards, now 71, has been a Muslim leader and an inspiration to other inmates, providing them with religious support, his backers say. Last year, he discovered he has liver cancer. Defense attorney Samuel Stretton took up his case and petitioned for "compassionate release" or "mercy release," asking a judge to release Edwards from Graterford so he could get the care needed and die in comfort. Following hearings last year, and after listening to arguments yesterday, Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner ruled that based on state law, the statute in this case "does not permit me to release someone, even someone as sick as Mr. Edwards."
