| State eyes prison growth |

IOWA - Bucking a 20-year trend, Iowa's prison population is down from last year. The state has incarcerated approximately 8,700 people, a 201 percent increase from two decades ago. But numbers are down by around 200 from last year. One of the biggest factors in growth has been the number of drug offenders occupying cells. Approximately 26 percent of the prison population is in for drug-related crimes. In 1986, that number was 2 percent, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections. "There are so many factors that are involved in this growth," said Jerry Burt, the Anamosa State Penitentiary warden. Anamosa is 139 percent over its capacity. Read more.
