| OpEd: Right track resolving racial disparity |

WISCONSIN - There's a lot of work to do. But it's good to know that Wisconsin legislators, judges and public safety officials already have a handful of proposals and programs developed that mirror the recommendations laid out last week by the "Commission on Reducing Racial Disparities in the Wisconsin Justice System." The Commission was tasked almost a year ago by Gov. Jim Doyle to examine whether there's a systemic problem in the state justice system that is unfairly targeting minorities. The panel was also asked to prescribe action. It did a good job. In 2005, while blacks accounted for 6 percent of Wisconsin's population, 45 percent of state prisoners were black. Whites accounted for 86 percent of the state population and 43 percent of the prison system's. Only South Dakota had a bigger disparity in 2005. Pretty sobering data.
