| Wardens await final word on possible releases |

CALIFORNIA - A pair of local wardens is awaiting news of how their operations could be affected if a proposed early release of state-prison inmates comes about. A target in a pair of lawsuits, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been run by a federal court-appointed official called a receiver since 2006. Each suit charges unconstitutional shortcomings in prison medical care because of overcrowding. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent budget-cut proposal includes 10 percent taken from the corrections-rehabilitation department. Schawarzenegger has said such a cut would bring early release of 22,000 inmates and would tend to stop judges' "breathing down our neck" about overcrowding. "It's a difficult situation," said Warden Matthew Kramer of Folsom State Prison. "We're waiting to see what comes out of the state." Read more.
