NEW ZEALAND - The head of the Corrections Department says action is already been taken to stamp out corruption at the country's prisons. For over a year, Rimutaka Prison has been under a cloud amidst allegations of drug and cellphone smuggling, intimidation and other irregular behaviour by [officers]. But a report from Wellington barrister David Patten has cleared the jail of systemic corruption, although he says the culture there allowed individual cases to occur. Corrections chief executive Barry Matthews admits there were flaws at Rimutaka that meant corruption could happen. Read more.
