OREGON - Two former Department of Corrections employees were awarded a combined $1 million by a Marion County jury in a lawsuit that included allegations of racial discrimination and retribution for whistleblowing. Russell Rice and Larry Lytle, who are white, were managers at the Santiam Correctional Institution and alleged that superintendent Frank Thompson, who is black, gave preferential treatment to other black employees. After a seven-day trial, a jury deliberated one day last week and ruled in the workers' favor. Rice was awarded $350,000 in economic damages for lost wages and $250,000 for noneconomic damages.
