School could house inmates

MISSISSIPPI - After the 37 female students at Columbia Training School are moved to Oakley Training School within 90 days, an alcohol and drug treatment unit for 300 nonviolent male state inmates could move into the school. Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps made the pitch for the future of the Columbia site on Monday during a House Juvenile Justice Committee hearing.

On Thursday, the Department of Human Services, which runs the training schools, announced Columbia's girls will join the 143 male students at Oakley, where "modifications" will be made to ensure gender separation. Columbia serves girls ages 10 to 18 for minor infractions such as truancy and shoplifting. Oakley houses boys ages 10 to 17. Marion County officials who attended the hearing said their concern is that the closure of Columbia will mean the loss of jobs in the county of about 25,600 residents. Read more.
