| Corrections headquarters move discussed |

OREGON - Several Salem elected officials have met with state administrators to discuss the fate of 44 acres of Oregon State Hospital land north of Center Street NE -- across the street from 100 acres earmarked for construction of a new state hospital. Four Salem Council members and three state lawmakers met Friday with Bruce Goldberg, the Department of Human Services director, and Claudia Black, Gov. Ted Kulongoski's adviser about health issues. Salem Mayor Janet Taylor wasn't invited to the session or given advance notice about it. City Council member Chuck Bennett, who requested the meeting, described it as the starting point for city-state discussions about the future of the 44-acre north hospital campus, including prospects for private redevelopment. "The state has no use for that land that I'm aware of," Bennett said Monday. "Certainly, DHS has indicated they are more than willing to talk about its eventual use other than as a center for state facilities. That can have a tremendous impact in that area of town." The north campus currently houses various hospital structures, state parking lots and grassy, park-like areas. It also has the administrative headquarters of the state Department of Corrections, commonly called the Dome Building because of its ornate top. Read more.
