| Cuts may signal facility closing |

ILLINOIS - Gov. Rod Blagojevich is considering closing Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill as part of an effort to cut state spending by 3 percent. Moments after Blagojevich delivered his State of the State speech Wednesday, he spoke to two area legislators, state Rep. Brent Hassert, R-Romeoville, and state Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi, D-Joliet, on the house floor. Blagojevich said there could be a "change of mission" for the prison, Hassert said. The option of closing Stateville was presented the same day legislators received copies of the proposed budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year. In the past, Blagojevich and other Illinois leaders have briefed legislators and the media about the budget the day before it was released. Read more.
