INDIANA - State Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh has vowed to try to restore stricter prohibitions on where a convicted sex offender can live to a bill she authored. VanDenburgh, D-Crown Point, said the Senate Committee on Corrections, Criminal Code and Civil Matters would weaken state law if its amended version of House Bill 1134 -- which allows sex offenders to live within 500 feet of a school or child care center -- replaces the 1,000-foot restriction currently enshrined. "As best as I could follow, the reasoning behind this change is that the distance requirements were making it difficult for offenders to find places to live," VanDenburgh said. Read more.
