Four male inmates are being investigated by state and local police after sneaking into the female cellblock of the Hamilton County (Ind.) Jail through a common utility area, authorities said.
Barry Blackwell, 21, Lebanon, and Kevin Daniels, 39, Michael Scott, 22, and William Huynh, 22, all of Indianapolis, reportedly knocked out a panel in a wall. They then climbed through the small hole to enter the utility area Wednesday afternoon, said Maj. Mark Bowen of the Sheriff's Department.
Lastly, they broke through a trapdoor to get into the female block, he said.
The men were discovered about 3:15 p.m. and were immediately returned to their cellblock. Bowen said there wasn't a threat of escape as the inmates moved from one secure area to another.
"It is an area that was vulnerable that we had no idea was vulnerable," he said.
Showers are in that utility area, so no cameras monitor it. Repairs have been made to the breached area, and police are investigating how they can make it more secure.
This type of incident had never occurred in the jail before, Bowen said.
Sheriff Doug Carter said initial evidence indicated the men and some of the women communicated with each other before the incident.
Carter anticipates criminal charges for the security breach and destruction of property.
Police also are determining what may have transpired when the inmates got into the female block, although they have ruled out any criminal activity.
The entire incident lasted about two hours, Carter said.
