Pared diets urged to save money

FLORIDA - Prison life has never been particularly easy, but legislators' proposed budget cuts could make doing hard time a lot harder. On the table: housing prisoners in tents, huts or on decommissioned aircraft carriers and even cutting the amount of food they are fed. When state legislators convene for the regular session March 4, their first line of business will be to cut about $400 million from this year's budget. They took out about $1 billion in the fall. And that's just the beginning.

Next, they will have to slash about $2.5 billion from next year's budget, the first time in recent history that the state's revenue collections will have decreased for two consecutive years. Of the $400 million in the first round of cuts, lawmakers will cut $65 million from criminal and civil justice programs. Read more.
