Treatment center battles over lease

PENNSYLVANIA - A company that treats inmates for drug and alcohol problems wants a federal judge to stop a state agency from kicking it out of Wernersville State Hospital next month. A federal mediator was assigned on Friday to help resolve a dispute between Firetree Ltd. and the Department of General Services that could soon trigger 150 layoffs. The Feb. 7 lawsuit by Williamsport-based Firetree accuses General Services Secretary Jim Creedon of retaliation by having the agency terminate its lease after the two sides could not agree who should pay a heating bill for one of the buildings.

Firetree claims the state agency acted because Firetree asked the state Board of Claims to decide who must heat one of the five Wernersville buildings it occupies under a 2004 lease. Read more.
