A former officer at the South Dakota State Penitentiary has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for driving an inmate to Huron and spending the day with him. Katrina Anne Moilan, 20, had pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting an escapee. She also received a suspended imposition of sentence, which will erase the conviction from her record in three years if she meets several conditions. She had faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on the charge. Moilan met Jason Allen Larson, 23, last summer when she worked in the prison's trusty unit. Larson is serving sentences for grand theft and robbery. As a minimum-security inmate, he lived in dormitory and worked at Wheeler Tank Manufacturing in Sioux Falls as part of a work release program. On Aug. 3, Larson wasn't scheduled to work but told prison officials he was. At some point, Moilan picked him up and they headed to Huron. There, they met Moilan's family at the state fair. Prison officials randomly check on work-release inmates, and that day a staff member called Wheeler Tank. Eventually, a link between Moilan and Larson was established. Moilan, who had been working at the penitentiary since May 2002, was fired from the penitentiary Aug. 15. |
