Inmate gets extra 18 months for escape plot

A man serving a 14-year drug sentence has been sentenced to an additional 18 months for plotting to use prison-made bombs in an escape attempt.
David Lara, 26, pleaded guilty Dec. 18 to conspiring to escape from a federal prison.  Last Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi ordered the sentence to be served after Lara completes his drug sentence.
Prosecutors said Lara and two other inmates at the Oakdale federal prison planned to build bombs using fertilizer and paint thinner smuggled from the prison work area. The bombs were to be detonated in different spots in the prison on July 4, 2003, and were meant to divert the attention of officers, authorities said.
Lara and co-defendant Heriberto Morales, 39, also had arranged for a car to be left for them near the prison, according to an indictment issued in October. The third inmate was not charged.
A trial date for Morales has not been set.
