| No funds to replace women's prison |

ALABAMA - The state of Alabama has shelved its plans to replace the Tutwiler Prison for Women, a 66-year-old facility that critics have said is among the nation's worst. Richard Allen, commissioner of the state Department of Corrections, said Thursday that the state lacks the funds to replace the prison. Plans previously had called for it to be replaced by the end of 2009. "I think Tutwiler will be our maximum-security women's facility for the foreseeable future," Allen said. Word that Tutwiler will not be replaced came on the heels of the release Thursday of a long-awaited state report on the condition of the corrections system for women. Read more.
