CALIFORNIA - In an effort to help the 80 percent of incarcerated women in the Santa Clara County Correctional Center who have children, the county Department of Corrections has partnered with First Five Santa Clara County to provide parenting education for mothers, officials said. Incarcerated mothers will be provided with classroom parenting instruction, a book on positive child rearing, and a parenting kit, according to county officials. County Supervisor Liz Kniss facilitated the partnership between the Department of Corrections and First Five, according to county officials. First Five parenting classes began Thursday and will continue today at the Elmwood Jail Complex, organizers reported. The former director of Maternal, Infant and Child Health in the county's Public Health Department will teach the classes, which will be held regularly at the jail. First Five Santa Clara County, which aids children through the age of 5, will also give mothers books about parenting in English and Spanish and parenting kits, worth about $75, when the women are discharged, officials said. The "Kit for New Parents" contains information on nutrition, safety, quality child care, health, discipline and early learning, officials said. Read more.
