| Corrections disputes violence level |

NEW ZEALAND - The Corrections Department says violence at Ngawha Prison in the Far North is not as great as a union for guards is claiming. The department and police are investigating after a prisoner was seriously assaulted at the prison's remand unit on Saturday. The Corrections Association says there had been about 40 violent incidents at the unit in the two months before Christmas, including fires, assaults and escapes onto the roof. But the manger of Northern prison services, Warren Cummins, says there have been just 13 incidents since July 2007.
