ARIZONA - Former Arizona Department of Corrections Director Samuel Lewis passed away on Saturday evening at the age of 83. Lewis was appointed in April 1985 and served under Governors Bruce Babbitt, Evan Mecham, Rose Mofford and Fife Symington. Prior to his appointment, Lewis served as the Deputy Director for the Arizona Department of Public Safety and Deputy Director for the Department of Corrections. During his tenure, Lewis instituted the Human Resources/Development Division and the Occupational Health Unit. Lewis also opened the Yuma, Eyman, and Winslow prisons. Lewis was the longest serving director of the Department of Corrections. Important state correctional laws were implemented during Lewis's time as Director including the Victim Notification and Truth-In-Sentencing statutes. Read more.
