ILLINOIS - Corrections officials say the cost of maintaining and fueling the department's vehicle fleet is skyrocketing. Now they're trying to cut back on those expenses, but it's not sitting well with prison workers. Officials with the Illinois Department of Corrections say they are only asking for more oversight of maintenance. But, officials with the prison workers union say allowing DOC vehicles to break down, or go idle, could end up costing everyone. Prisoners have to get from jail to hearings... from hearings to prison... and everywhere in between... And they do so thanks to dedicated state workers and dependable vehicles. But the word dependable is now debatable.... "Now, our members who drive vans transporting inmates, or youth, or prison buses or parole agent vehicles, all- almost all of which are over 200,000 miles." Read more.
