A man who helps feed inmates inside the South Dakota State Penitentiary is in the hospital. Now investigators believe he was the victim of an assault. Last Friday morning, just after cooking breakfast for inmates in the Jameson Annex, a food service worker was assaulted. Penitentiary officials say he was overseeing other staff when he was hurt. Michale Winder with the Department of Corrections says, "He was found unconscious in the Jameson dining room staff office just before nine Friday morning. They attempted to revive him, an ambulance was called and took him to a hospital in Sioux Falls where he remains." As in all state institutions, the Penitentiary has an outside food service company come in to make meals for prisoners. Investigators are not saying what happened to the worker or how he is doing tonight. But, they do tell us an inmate is suspected of the assault. Winder says, "As a result of that investigation, an inmate named Gregory Stephens has been placed in disciplinary segregation a the Jameson Annex at the Penitentiary." Twenty-eight year old Gregory Stephens in not originally from Sioux Falls. He's serving time for stealing a car and possession of a controlled substance. He had ingredients to make meth in his car when he was arrested in Turner County. |
