MICHIGAN - State officials announced today plans to close Robert Scott Correctional Facility in May 2009. The Department of Corrections said closing the women's prison will save $12 million next year and $36 million per year after. It has been open since 1991 and houses up to 880 prisoners. Women prisoners will be transferred to the Huron Valley Complex. The Corrections Department said the move allows the state to consolidate the female prison population and reduce transportation costs. One of the difficulties is the facility is capped at 880 prisoners; limiting "management options and operational efficiency," according to a MDOC release. Read more.
