| Jail passes surprise inspection |

MARYLAND - The Accomack County jail passed a recent surprise health department inspection with flying colors. The Feb. 8 unannounced inspection found 82 inmates housed in the 96 bed facility, according to Scott Thomas, senior environmental health specialist with the Eastern Shore Health District. Thomas reported the findings in a letter to the state Department of Corrections, which requested the inspection after a Jan. 30 letter to the editor in the News cited substandard living conditions, overcrowding and peeling paint at the jail. Thomas said an inspector found the cell block walls and hallways "clean, dry and hazard free," with no sign of insects or rodents, but he said some peeling paint was found on cell bars and inside some parts of the cells themselves.
