| John Doe reform in gridlock |

WISCONSIN - Time appears to be running out for state lawmakers to pass legislation aimed at ending abuse of John Doe laws by inmates. With the Senate and Assembly legislators gridlocked behind their own specific versions of reform, correctional officers across the state see chances for meaningful reform slipping away. "Though both houses of the state Legislature have passed bills that would reform the state's John Doe law, without compromise that gets a bill on the governor's desk, both houses will be held responsible for failure to fix a problem that urgently needs a solution," said Marty Beil, executive director of Council 24 AFSCME, the Wisconsin state employees union. Under Wisconsin's John Doe law, anyone who believes a crime has been committed can go to a judge and ask for an investigation of the complaint. Read more.
