| Prison phones still regulated |

ALABAMA - Some companies are trying to charge families of prison inmates more to accept phone calls, and the Public Service Commission doesn't like it. The PSC issued a ruling last week telling inmate phone service providers they have not been deregulated under a 2005 state communications law and can't arbitrarily raise collect-call rates from the state's prisons. The PSC is also mulling an overall review of the industry in which companies pay state prisons and local law enforcement agencies commissions for the collect calls by inmates. "This stuff tends to be very controversial," said David Rountree, a spokesman for PSC President Jim Sullivan. "We would do so from (a) perspective that looks out for the interests of three parties involved" -- the companies, the prison system and the families that pay for the calls, he said. Read more.
