| County jail will need to add beds |

NEW YORK - efferson County will have to add 11 jail beds in the next two years to house all of its prisoners, according to a just-released needs assessment of the county facility. Carter Goble Associates Inc., Columbia, S.C., also projected that the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building will need 191 total beds by 2030 to be fully prepared for temporary population spikes and space issues that will arise because of jumps in certain classifications, such as female or juvenile inmates. The jail's capacity is now 160 inmates, although the state Commission of Correction limits that to 144 for health and safety reasons. When capacity is reached, inmates are shipped to other county jails. Jefferson County pays other counties $80 to $110 per day to house overflow inmates. Read more.
