Medical care costing $1 million

TENNESSEE - When a person goes to jail, the jail becomes responsible for all the medical care that person needs. Providing such care costs the jail — and county taxpayers — more than $1 million a year. Money for this operation comes from tax dollars, and Chief Deputy Ed Patterson said taxpayers are being "double-taxed" when an inmate also is collecting TennCare benefits, a problem that hasn't gone away despite recent changes in TennCare regulations.

According to jail administrator Capt. Douglas Tackett, the Montgomery County Jail is responsible for paying the medical expenses of inmates if the treatment is required while the inmate is in the jail's custody. Read more.
