| Senate backs corrections restructuring |

VERMONT - he Vermont Senate unanimously passed a major corrections restructuring bill Tuesday, calling for the closure of at least one state prison and putting more money toward treatment and rehabilitation. Senators voted 27-0 to give the bill preliminary approval in the latest effort to curb the rising cost of housing Vermont's criminals, which threatens to overtake the state budget in coming years. Sen. Richard Sears, D-Bennington, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, urged fellow lawmakers to support the effort, saying this is the time to tackle the thorny finances behind prisons before it is too late. Vermont spends $1.37 on corrections for every dollar it spend to support higher education, giving a skewed perspective of what the priorities of the state are as reflected in where it spends its money, Sears said.
